Treat your back with care – Ayurveda treatment for back pain


Spondylitis is one of the major postural problems all around the world.  As there is increasing number of people spending time sitting  with  laptops, i pads  and television more and more number of Spondylitis cases are seen. Spondylitis   is a type of arthritis that affects joints in the spine. The patient feels a pain and stiffness a shooting in the low back area and sensation of pain. The stiffness is felt especially early in the morning or after periods of inactivity.
Spondylitis is an inflammatory disease that involves the joints of the spine and primarily seen in young adults. It is more generally seen in men than in women. Spondylitis runs in families.  Commonly seen are cervical spondylitis and lumbar spondylitis. In cervical Spondylitis   person feels severe neck pain, headache and stiffness . In lumbar Spondylitis there will be Pain in the lower back that worsens during morning.
Ayurveda can treat spondylitis in safe and simpler way. There are three principles for the Spondylitis treatment in Shathayu Ayurveda:
  1. Reduction of the inflammation in tissues – Panchakarma treatments
  2. Increasing blood circulation in that area – External application like massages
  3. Correction of the calcium metabolism – Internal medication
Severe and chronic cases of Spondylitis require Panchakarma treatments, but in acute and fresh cases only medicines too work well.
DIET
  • Nutritious food to be taken
  • Avoid sour curds, deep fried, oily, carbohydrate rich foods
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, and whole-grain products
  • Drink 8-10 glasses of water a day
  • Bitter vegetables like bitter variety of drumstick, neem flowers and bitter gourd are very useful
  • Wheat is better than rice for the patient
  • Maintaining ideal weight
HOME REMEDIES FOR SPONDYLITIS
  • Oil prepared from garlic and rubbed on the affected part will give great relief. This oil is prepared by frying 10 cloves of garlic in 60 grams of oil in a frying pan. They should be fried slowly till they are brown. After it is cooled, it should be applied vigorously on the affected part and allowed to remain there for three hours. The patient may thereafter have a warm bath. This treatment should be continued for at least 15 days.
  • The patient should avoid fatty, spicy and fried foods, sour curd, sweets, sugar, condiments as well as tea and coffee (at least to some extent)
  • Relief from pain can be obtained by taking lemon juice mixed with common salt twice or thrice daily
  • Keep all affected joints mobile
  • The back exercises are recommended to reduce the pain
  • Keep good posture and avoid curvature of the spinal cord
  • Avoid permanent sedentary for long periods
